As Miss Golightly was saying...

A few months back I introduced my 17 year-old daughter, Cydnii to 'Breakfast at Tiffany's' (she wasn't into older movies before so she wouldn't have really "got it" before). She was instantly in love with Audrey and Holly! Up until this point she was undecided about bedroom decor, Audrey/Holly changed all of that!

As part of this transformation, I sooo wish I had before pictures to share, we HAD to paint the walls- as Cydnii had turned her walls into a giant yearbook for all visitors to sign.

The wall color: Urban Sunset (Valspar), we even painted the ceilings.

The "theme": Holly Golightly/Audrey Hepburn Inspired

The accent colors: Pink, Black and of course Tiffany Blue

We already had her bed (I bought it on craigslist.com for $50, just had to buy a mattress) we were going to paint the bed but decided not to, since it fits in ok. The bedding took some time, she had to find just the right thing. She said that she would know it when she saw it...it would scream "Holly Golightly". I think she made a great choice: Hot pink, black and gray strips with this great pattern and pink sheets with white polka dots (sorry the pattern on the comforter doesn't photograph very well).

I even lucked out at Christmas and found this great Holly-esque sleep mask at Claire's

Since we have a very small hall bathroom, for two teen girls to use, hubby and I convinced the girls to do any "getting ready" stuff that didn't require the bathroom in their rooms. Because of this Cydnii opted to have a hand-me-down (from my brother) armoire (sorry no before, but it was just a plain oak stained armoire). We painted it Tiffany Blue with a white strip down the side, so it looked like a giant Tiffany box.

We also removed the closet doors and added a tension rod and a set of hot pink shear curtains and black shear curtains so that she could cover her messy closet. This tie-back was something we went looking for, it is definitely Holly.

As for window dressings we decided to kill 2 birds with one stone. Cyd has a large collection of scarves and it continues to grow. So instead of stashing them in a drawer somewhere we bought a curtain rod with rings that had clips. The idea was to clip the scarves to the rings making a unique window covering.

There are a few problem areas still to address, one being this end table. Its cute and serves its' purpose but it is a little bland compared to the rest of the room. So we will definitely have to do something with this. Another issue shown in this picture is the power strip. It stays pulled out because, like most teens today, Cyd is constantly texting so her phone is constantly dying. Hmmm, time to check Pinterest for cute ideas for charging. Just not sure how to do this since she usually plugs it in and keeps using it.

Another problem area...this friggin' chair. I got 4 of these with a dining table I purchased from craigslist.com, paid $55 for dining table, coffee table and 4 of these beauties. Instead of buying a more suitable and well let's face it cuter chair we are going to fix this one up. Not only is it not cute it is uncomfortable to sit in. Check back for the result of the chair makeover (See "Sit a Spell" post).

And last but not least...lighting. We found a super cute lamp that I thought would go great in this room, but the colors are all wrong. The base is kind of a bronze and the shade is tan (although the pattern on it is perfect.) Check the "Choose to Shine" post for the lamp redo.

After a few days, and a few changes...here is where we are with this room, I moved the big "Tiffany" box armoire to the foot of the bed (to prepare for the coming tv) and put this little beauty in its place (you might recognize this as the over worked tv stand in the China Cabinet redo post and Gettin' Gussied Up).

My daughter found this great poster at Lowe's, I had an old frame that I didn't have a place for so I spray painted it black and removed the glass, cut down the poster a few inches to fit an viola!

Here is the cutesy chair in place at the dressing table. We were going to reuse the mirror that I removed from the China Cabinet redo but that would have cost a lot more than just buying this $13 door mirror and hanging it the opposite way.

There is still some work to do but we are making progress. Here is the break down of some of the cost:
  • Dressing table- free, hand-me-down and re-purposed (seen similar pieces on craigslist for about $50)
  • Drawer pulls- $12 ($3/each- Lowe's)
  • Paint (already had the black paint), purchased 1 quart of eggshell fushia Valspar- $15 (Lowe's)
  • Chair- $free.99  :)
  • Fabric- $18 ($6/yard- JoAnn's- more than I would like but it was too perfect of a match to pass up)
  • Mirror- $13 (Lowe's)
  • Lamp/black- $12 (Lowe's)
  • Poster- $6 (Lowe's)
  • Frame- Free-took from another room in the house
  • Everything else we already had.
